Cheap Ebay Leds

Before I go any farther, I got this idea from another forum in which a member has been using these LEDs with succes for over a year. I'll put a link to the original thread at the end. These LEDs are epistar brand 3x1 watt gu10 socket bulbs with 30 deg optics. The whites are labeled as 6500k but look way whighter, not yellow at all. I bought three whites, three blues, and six gu10 sockets from Ebay. To go over my sons ten gallon softy tank. Bulbs were 4.50$ each sockets were about 1.80$ each. Total about 32.00$. They took forever to come in[about three weeks] because they came from china. I wired the sockets together by soldering the leads from the first socket to the leads of the next one about half way up. I wired three together and the other three separate. Then each set of three were attachted to there own power cord. As these do not need drivers you can use an extention cord cut off female end, i used some cord by the foot from Lowes. So now they can be on seperate timers, the blues on one hites on another. I drilled 1" holes in a peice of 1/4" plywood and staggered the sockets so in line they go WBWBWB. Then inserted the bulbs in the sockets and they hold themselves in place. I mounted the plyood to the hood and thats about it. Now next weekend i ill be building a new hood to hang from the wall. I want to raise the lights just a little for better spread. I cant say much anything about groth, but the colors in person are great. The whites are very bright, kind of a 10-12k look. The blues make coral pop like no t5's or halides ive ever seen and the shimmer is great. I ill post updates of growth as time goes by. please ask questions or leave comments, tell me what you think or suggestions. Sorry trying to get all the pics to load. And the link. Im not very tech savy but im trying. im working on it please be patient.

Ozzy and I were slumming on the same thread on RC and decided to try these out. I'd previously bought a 5000K bulb from Lowe's, a 21W. It seems to light the tank very well, but it was too yellow. I ordered 4 of the Royal blue bulbs which I'll pair with the white to see what kind of effect I get. At $4.50 each it isn't an expensive experiment and seems to work well for others. My bulbs are also screw in type, so I won't have to get special sockets.

I finally received my 3W Royal Blue LED's today. Shipped in a regular bag envelope. Try doing that with egular light bulbs! They're really bright, but putting them over a tank will be the proof. It may take a little while, as I'm involved in my new tank, but I'll post as soon as I get them set up.

Update. I loved these lights when I tested them on my sons softie tank I ordered more and replaced the t5's on my 20l with em. Been runnin em a couple months now and still love em. Color is great growth has been better than with my 4x24 w t5's. So far nothing bad to report. Heat is not an issue. I don't have fans on em. They all seem to be working like they were when I got em. I recently got a wild hair and pulled all my rock, replaced with new and I'm going Sps only. So I'm excited to see how goes. I'm also toying with the idea of using them on my fw planted tank. Scince I still haven't got any good pics up yet, if anyone really wants to see pics of the lights or my tank ill email em to ya. Just pm your email or ill text em to ya. I'll update if anything changes.

Yardboy. How you like em? Did you just get blues? They also have mixed bulbs out now, 2w1b. I got a few of those in. There nice, but I think the blues in them aren't as royal blue looking.

Yea Ozzy,I got only the blues. I set them up in a row to supplement the T-5's over my tank. I am very pleased with them. After several months I noticed that one had gone out and thought, "Oh no, here we go" but it turned out to have not been screwed in tight enough! They definitely add pop to the colors of fluorescent corals. I've ordered more recently but haven't gotten them in yet. I went with more blues and will put them all on a seperate circuit to come on before everything else for early morning viewing.

Following the thread about them over on RC it's funny how people who have never used them have such strong negative opinions about them but the people who are using them are all positive. Not sure what that says about our society in general, if anything.

Good to hear it was just loose. Yeah I agree. The only bad comments are those who haven't used them. I think your right its a price tag opinion. Because they're not 400$ and in a pretty box there not cool. But I think it'll pick up a bit. I'm just gonna enjoy them and share the info I have with those here that are interested.

my boxes mere not pretty....

Icould understand a "wait and see" attitude. But badmouthing something until it is totally proved out is just silly. Nothing new though. Remember "Fulton's Folly" from American History Class? Apparently it wasn't in a pretty box either!

I agree with you. I would have probably gone the DIY route had I not talked myself into getting the ones I have now. I am a firm believer in "do it yourself" projects no matter what the mainstream is. Hell, just look at my tank build you will see that. My first protein skimmer was a mag12 on a 5 gallon water bottle and a homemade venturi :-)

If you can save cash and get the same results.....do it.
