Diving In Panama City Beach Today

Recommended Posts

I'm diving and doing a little collecting today at St. Andrews Bay in Panama City Beach today if anyone would like to join me and Diver Dave. We are leaving Destin around 10:00-10:30 and hoping to be in the water somewhere around noon.

You can reach me at 850-685-1500 if your interested in going with us.

Had an excellent dive! 72 Ft. Max. Collected some nice specimens. Blue tang, awesome looking tricolor blenny, butterfly fish, a small sponge.

Vis was great but slow degraded over the dive due to the tide. I chose eAN32 for this dive and was in the water over an hour and twenty minutes on an 80 cu. tank!

I'm ready for the meeting! Hopefully we get some divers besides me and quickdraw. Yardboy (Roger) isn't going to be able to scuba with me. So we need more people to go for sure :)

It's legal if you have a fishing license, and adhere to the regulations for collection. I've never been stopped or inspected, but there's always a first time.

Okay, if the storms will stay away this weekend, we should be in for a great dive this year at our upcoming meeting. That last storm almost certainly brought with it a lot of tropical species, so we should be able to see a lot of great stuff that we normally wouldn't. Also, after a year, maybe some of the oil will be gone and things will have started to grow back again. I sure hope so.

I'm staying at a condo on East end of beach and we are finding tons of tiny aiptasia eating filefish along the beach today. They are hiding under the grass that is floating.

If you find yourself wanting to go to the jetties often, an annual park pass is a great deal ($130)since it's good for all state parks in Florida and they give you the gate code so you can go any time. Great for beating the crowds, going down there when there's no one around.

Collectors licenses aren't being issued any more, you have to buy an existing one, to the tune of over $100,000!!! No ricordia's this far North.

I just wanted to throw the idea out there, I think it would be fun. How long of a drive is it from this area though about 10 hours to key largo? prob 11ish to key west?

From Panama City, it takes me 14 hours to Tavernier, which is where I go to stay and dive. On to Key West takes another almost two hours.

From Pensacola to Panama is about 2 hours, but you can go I10 and only add an hour from there, so 14-15 hrs. to the Keys. Your mileage may vary. I drive slower and stop fairly frequently.

MapQuest says 11.5 hrs fm Pensacola. Good Luck with that!

It took us 16 hours to get to Pensacola from Tavernier, but we were in a slow frozen fish truck and very very tired.

The speed limit in the Keys is only 45 and it's no-passing most of the way, so it's slow going.

Totally worth it, though.

yeah i might be getting ahead of myself with this keys idea, i guess i should explore around this gulf area first before trying to go back home to dive.
