How To Quiet Down My Protein Skimmer

Recommended Posts

At the air intake of my protein skimmer(adjustable knob) the air pulsates sucking air in. I've tried sticking rolled up paper towel in the hole which does help but sometimes i can hear it in another room. i can turn the air intake down some and helps a little but then i'm defeating the purpose of the skimmer. I've thought about putting the skimmer on a timer for night use and week day use. I would rather find a muffler for it. its a large one in my sump.

Ok here's what I've done in the past with huge success. Get a medicine bottom, like a pill bottle...drill a hole in the lid the diameter of your venturi hose...probably 1/4" You can the drill smaller holes into the body of the medicine bottle. If this isn't up to par with your likings, then you can stuff cotton inside...this will muffle the sound quite effectively.

A true DIY.

DO NOT put your skimmer on a timer. It will end up being less effective at it's job as the bio film inside would break down while the skimmer is off.

A 8-10 inch piece of 1" PVC with caps on both ends. Get some 3/8" tubing and drill a hole in each cap so that the tubing will fit snug. Put 1 cap on the pipe and slide the tubing into tje cap untill it's flush with the end with no cap. Cut the tube with an inch or so sticking out of the cap. Repeat on the other end. Now you should have a pipe with caps and tubes sticking out an inch or so. Connect your air suction line to one of the tubes. This works on a cancellation principle and there's one on mine and it works.

a pipe or tube probably won't work. i have a large tube/pipe coming from my p/s pump that has a ajustable knob at the top with a small hole in it.

I've tried stuffing paper towl into the hole, works a little. my tank is pretty quiet except that pulsating p/s. it skims really good just noisy. I have my p/s in a seperate tank(to keep micro bubbles out of my main tank). I have a pipe that comes from my return on my p/s stuck inside the foam around the return tube and the water flows back into my trickle filter. this puts back presure on the p/s so i leave it wide open andit works great except for the noise.

thanks for the response and i just now got back in here. didn't get notifed i had feed back. I've started removing some bio balls and seems to be going good. I will eventualy remove them all if i have no problems. i have over 200 pounds live rock and around 200 pounds live sand.everything seems to be going great except the pits i couldn't see on the inside of the acrylic tank that grows algea. I found something to get it off but its a pain. love the lighter tank but wish i had glass.
