Catching 3 Yellow Tail Damsels

Recommended Posts

In our 150 gallon we just got new pumps (Vortech MP40's) as well as new lights, and as a result we're wanting to put some more fish in there. Plus our flame fin tang (he has white on the tail, not sure if flamefin or the other) barely comes out and I've read that another tang will help with that. Now the problem: we have three yellow-tailed damsels in the tank. How do I catch them? I've heard the bottle method but it confuses me.

Thanks,

Zach

Once you remove the damsels then the tang mat come out more on his own.

I have always just net caught fish so, sorry I am no help with the bottle trap.  I think its just basically cutting a bottle in half and inverting the top into the bottom portion with a bit of food,  once the fish is in then they don't seem able to figure out how to exit easily

May I suggest contacting Trent. he has a fish trap that works preety well. It worked great in catching a troublesome melenarius wrasse I had without hurting the fish. I hope Trent posts the design on the site because it is very utilitarian.

Thanks Larry. Messaging him now, and if that doesn’t work somehow, I’ll try the bottle. Thanks again!

+1 on the bottle trap, just used one of those cheap zephyrhills water bottles to catch a neon dottyback in order to rehome it. You may have better luck with a 1 Liter bottle with their favortite food inside since you have a much bigger tank than I do (20 gallon).

I tried the bottle trap to catch an asshole 4 stripe Damsel and just caught a few Hermits. The traps online supposedly work, but IMO are a little pricey considering you may/may not ever use it again. I ended up having to clean up my rock some, so while 75% of the rock was outta the tank he had no where to go and I netted the little shit!. Now all is happy in the tank and I was able to add the few fish I wanted to but couldn't because of the terror.
