Disaster!!!!

Recommended Posts

Just when I thought everything was dialed in, DISASTER! Sunday when the storms came through the power went out. Leave it to Gulf Power to TAKE 10 HOURS to get the power back on. When it finally came on I found I had:

Acropora Formosa - DEAD

Hydnopora - DEAD

Birds nest Coral - DYING

Garf Bonsai Coral - Bad Shape (possibly dying)

Well, on the bright side if I get the job at TCU I won't have worry about selling my coral.

let me know if you need rescue / recovery tank while things get back to normal. I have a little room.

Damn, that sucks.

You have no back up? I have a couple 12VDC batteries wired together and charged with a BatteryMINDer. Gives my MP60 about 4 days standby backup power (calculated) at any time. Simple system, I detailed in my build thread.

Thanks, I will definitely check that out. Things are back to normal, but I still may lose the Birds Nest and Garf Bonsai.

That stinks Larry. Hope everything else fares ok and that the other two pieces recover. I am surprised that ten hours without power did so much damage.

Yeah, I am surprised that so much went South also. But after 10 hours I guess should expect something. If nothing else its good guide post for anyone else has a power outage.

On base here there is a lot of construction all around this new housing they are building. There have been 4 planned outages that supposed to last 3-4 hours put often run double that. Thank goodness I was ready. I would have had some losses by now for certain.

You should consider writing up your backup system and posting as an article for easy reference by forum members.

Working on the house I am moving to soon and I have a manual transfer switch and generator plug being installed outside for just this reason.  I don't have a whole house capable generator but I can run 60% or more of the house and not have to run extension cords everywhere.

At the bottom Page 2 and top of Page 3 of his build thread has some mentions on it,  not sure I remember seeing a complete write-up.  I am sure some google searching for DIY battery backups for your pumps with show you all you need to know.

Yeah, I am still trying to figure out exactly what happened. From what everyone has told me, a 10 hour outage should not have caused that much damage. The tank is not overstocked and I did a check on all of the parameters, which Mg, Ca and ALK were fine and there were no ammonia, nitrite or nitrate spikes. I guess it is just the luck of the draw. Every time I start thinking that reef keeping is more a science, some thing like this happens and makes me realize it is more an art akin to snake-handling.

I know what it was. During that 10 hour outage you didn't sing to you tank. It thought you abandoned it and could not go on living with out you and did the only honorable thing and sacrificed it's self, so that their revered one "The Larry" would come back and bring the light.

Question,. What was the tank temp when the power came back on?  Just wondering if there was a big temp spike (or fall) and then a fast return to normal that might have been a contributing factor.

That's a good idea. I've gotten a lot of questions whenever I post about it.
