I hope it works. A lighter was 100% effective for me.

There's no way I could reach the majority of them in my system, it's bad.

I have also placed a shell over some (starve them of light) then they crawl onto the shell, you take it our and throw it away. This was successful 50% of the time, hence the lighter.

When and where did you get aiptasia from?

From some live rock I added to seed the system, however my mistake was feeding the fish heavily with out a control measure.

Weekly video update. Happy and healthy fish. Showing off my shimmer and Vortech. Also mounted some corals up and now they can be seen much more easily and showcased. Very pleased with all today. Might just clean the skimmer lol!

Took this out of the fuge, about 3 gallons of cheato.

My video today.

How does the shimmer look to others? You guys?

This week was a busy one for me, I didn't do any of my normal daily tasks or cleaning. This was a great test of my equipment. My skimmer performed perfectly making a very consistent coffee color skin, and with the neck cleaner I have it dialed better no longer making half gallon a day. Now it's more like half gallon for the week. I'm sure it could go just like that for weeks unattended. Checked my parameters and nothing needed any adjustment, all where exactly like last week.

ALK 8.8

Cal 420

Mag 1380

Nitrate 0.25

Phosphate 0.02

Still need to upgrade my Kalk dosing pump however to something more consistent. As the saturated Kalk water drops in my brute the flow from the pump drops.

I am now at the point that saturated Kalk perfectly maintained my ALK levels. When demand increases I will have to add vinegar to increase the Kalk saturation or begin two part dosing. I have all the equipment needed however I think I could easily add vinegar precisely to increase Kalk to meet demand, to a point.

Attempted to introduce the purple tang and that didn't go well and I had to put him back in the QT. I'm going to fatten him up because he is very much smaller than all my other tangs, tiny infact. Also move some rock work around and may try a acclimation box.

All in all very happy now with progress and current status of the system. I have solved many issues (monti eating nudis, AEFW, maybe even red bugs, bryopsis, chronic low pH, micro bubbles, and ich/crypto) now have a aiptasia problem made worse by overfeesing. I'm sure I will over come this problem with diligence, research, hard work, and patience like the others. I ordered 8 aiptasia eating Berghia Nudibranchs from SaltyUnderground.com. They arrived alive and well, acclimation went well and they hide quickly in the rock once I placed them. Let's hope they are enough. I want to get a Copperband Butterfly fish however they are not guaranteed to eat them and they will eat the Berghia Nudibranchs potentially. I think I'll get one and by the time it has completed the QT process I will know if the Berghia Nudibranchs are alive and making any headway. Then I might just add him any way because I love this fish.

Just added our prize fish, the Red Sea Purple Tang, doing well. Has a few stand offs with the much larger yellow tang but now is keeping his own. When I tried adding him two weeks ago he didn't do so well. Been two days now and I think it's safe to say it's going to work. This makes me very happy. I now have the tangs I've always wanted and they seem fat and happy. I feed them a half sheet up to a full sheet of nori everyday. Some frozen brine and mysis shrimp, and Hikari pellets.

Flow is very high in my display and the tangs enjoy that, there is just enough hiding space but they all stay out and swim now. Before when I had just two they stayed hidden most of the time when people where around. Now the tank looks lively, healthy, and colorful.

The color of my Blue Tang really stands out, she almost glows under the Kessils. She has gained significant wight already and eats very well. Not any sign of HLLE due to my choice of ROX BRS Carbon that rinses clean.

The Ruby Red Dragonet that I added two weeks ago is also doing very well. Putting on weight and I can visibly see his full belly. I have not had to add any pod, there is a very healthy population in my display, 100 gallon sump, and the 40 gallon cheato refugium.

Corals are doing well and my nutrients have increased from undetectable, ALK consumption has increased so I adjusted my Kalk. Stable at 9.0now. Acans all have new heads, new acro frags are encrusting the plugs and soon they will be mounted on rock and I can removed the ugly egg crate they are sitting on now.

Still battling the aiptasia problem, I have seen the nudis I bought to help that problem but they may not be enough unless they can reproduce. I've heard that is difficult but possible in a display. They have no predators so it's possible, however if I get a copper band it may eat them.

It's begun to get cooler and my 800 watt heater seems to have no problem keeping up with the temperature. My garage door remains open right now until I can get a line ran from my skimmer air intake to the outside. I'm also considering adding a foam lid on the sump. Maybe a 1" thick rigid foam insulation that can be easily cut to fit my plumbing. That will depend on how well I can maintain the correct temperature in the coldest nights and power consumption.

My aptasia eating filefish worked. It took it a month to notice them then they were gone almost the next day. And it hasn't touched anything else in the tank since. Of course i like triggers and filefish, so it's nice to have one in the tank that isn't munching on everything.

I feel like I should add some more light to my fuge for increased performance. With the added fish nutrient control will be important. I'm looking at getting one of the SB reef light fuge fixtures.

I had a problem with micro bubbles in the display when I removed the filter socks. I removed them so that I could have a healthier pod population in the sump and fuge, also like the idea of food and larva being able to make a full journey through my system to better feed my fish and coral. Also don't like maintaining them.

So I made a bubble trap in my sump with an ice cream bucket. It's working very well but not perfect. Still getting some bubbles from the refugium drain also. I also slowed the Jebao RW-8 in the sump, this will keep the bubbles at the surface so they can pop. I need just enough flow to slowly stir the sump so the MarinePure block and live rock can act as a crypto refugium.

I have considered them, might be a better option if I want to keep the nudis. They also seem to be easier to get them to eat. I have had a copper band before, love that fish, didn't have trouble getting him to eat frozen. However there is plenty of other stuff he can eat in my system. Pods have done very well in my system, amphipods, isopods, copepods, and I've even seem Marine mysis shrimp. It's amazing all the life that came from a single small rock I used to seed this tank, some many other really cool things I've found. Another reason I love this hobby and stare at my tank at night. I have about 7 peppermint shrimp but they must be well fed because they haven't done much to the aiptasia. I have a feeding problem, can't bare to see my fish not eat. Not sure how old this purple tang is but when I got him he was really surprisingly tiny and in just 4 weeks has gain visible weight.

Needless to same but very significant, this system is humming along beautifully. I've lost more fish (5) than coral (2, they where tiny gifted specs of a coral) and lost them only because they jumped either during my QTs or while I was transferring my tank and moving. Never underestimate the aim of a fish and the size of a spot it can and WILL jump through. I am pleased with all my equipment choices and I don't think I would have done anything differently. it's perfect and I'm very happy and proud of it. This tank is going to be amazing when my corals fill out and I buy some more.

Future plans:

I will put my two part dosing online when my Kalk no longer meets demand.

Add a trio of Bartlett Anthias

Add ornamental cleaner shrimp

Find some rainbow/muilti color acros

Find some prize rainbow acans like I had in Arizona

Add an one more Tunze 6105 and get both of them programmed into my APEX for some cool flow programming.

Find a dosing program for micro elements I like. Considering either Brightwell products (Koralcolor Iodine), KZ products, or Red Sea

Design, build, and implement an daily automatic water change system. Looking at getting Neptune DOS. I already have two 55 gallon brutes, a Iwaki 40 external pump. Need a drain or receptical for the waste. There are no drain lines in or near my tank or garage.

Build a coral QT, already have a very good 40 gallon fish QT that has been amazing and I keep it maintained at all times.

Working on getting a quote for a floating canopy. This will let me add the T5 retro kits. Any ideas to help make it work? I was thinking one just like the BRS 160 is perfect.

Those berghia will have no problems reproducing in your tank. So long as there's no predators (peppermint shrimp) eating them up. That's not very many though and if you have a lot of aiptasia expect it to take a couple months for them to multiply before they really start mowing them down.

I don't think the peppermint shrimp will hurt them much because I have good LR with lots of places for them the shrimp can't get to, the shrimp are well feed so they don't even hurt the aiptasia, it is a large tank. I got 8 total and placed them all on the same rock with plenty of aiptasia so they should find each other easily. I've already seen a few eat some aiptasia. I'm hopeful this works out.

I'm getting a canopy and will be adding 4 60" LET retrofit T5s. What bulb combination would you guys recommend for this. They will be supplementing my Kessil AP700s. I was thinking two Blue Plus and two Coral Plus but not sure.

Either, 2 blue+, 1 coral+, 1 purple+.

Or 3 blue+, 1 coral+

I like that the purple brings out the reds and purples better. And coral+ for growth. That sounds like a good combo.

Haha, I think he like his new home just fine, almost doubled weight in just the few weeks I've had him.
