So what is the rule of thumb for cleaning skimmers? How often, scrub or soak, cleaner or vinegar water, lemon juice? I clean the top of it every 2 or 3 days and drain every day but have never cleaned. Second question does anyone know why they call it a rule of thumb?? With out looking it up!

Ok I maybe doing it wrong but what i do on our skimmer is once every 3 months take it out of the refugium to get at the pump. Soak it in vinegar then scrub with a doggy or kids soft toothbrush.  Give everything a good rinsing. NO SOAP. the cup gets emptied as needed(daily), on the throat of the cup I wipe the worst off with a sponge and hot water. That's about it.

If money is not an issue, the MP40 or MP60 is a great pump. Please keep in mind the 60 will really push water. IMHO they are on the too expensive in today's market place. The RW40 can push just as much water (maybe more) with similar flow patterns and ability to point the direction. The RW40 is roughly $120 for two and that's with the controller.

Just my two cents...I like to save money...even if I have to replace every couple years, it is still less expensive.

So I ordered my glass from Pensacola glass. They had 3/8 instead of 1/4. So I went ahead and ordered it. A little more then I was hopping to pay but I figured you want to play you have to pay!

Mike I have to work this evening or I would come up and help. What I noticed was do one seam of silicone at a time it starts setting relatively quickly. And make sure to get a nice solid bead down so you don't end up with a light spot.

The tank at my house. Up and running 2 years. I taped into it and added the 40. The algae looks like green/brown hair. But there is none in the sump or tank.

Hey mike what are your nitrates and phosphates at? Looks and sounds like regular old hair algae to me and you have to limit their food source. I know you got the Gfo from me but not sure where your phosphate was originally or if you have been monitoring.
