Toying With An Idea (Group Buy)

Recommended Posts

Just wondering how many might be interested in a group buy with an e-tailer. I would be willing to make all the calls/emails. I've never been involved in one. So I don't know if it could be put together before the next meet. I was thinking about maybe after the first of the year. We could schedule a meet for a Saturday afternoon in late January or early Febuary and get a UPS/FedEX Saturday delivery. I know Saturday would be ALOT harder for some to make it. Like I said this is just an idea. Haven't really nailed down which site to contact. Or even if enough would be interested. Another thing to consider is where to have that meet if we do this. I'm not sure how or if JR and Steven at Petland would accommodate a meet where we get alot of livestock not from them.

Just bring this up 'cuz with the sites I want $30 of stuff at this site $40 at another. But the $40 shipping for orders under the free shipping amount.

Like to know who would be interested and what site you'd prefer.

I was thinking about one of these 5 sites.

Blue Zoo Aquatics, Easy to navigate prices avg, Some harder to find fish and inverts, good stock

Fresh Marine, Easy to navigate, prices avg good stock, very high min for free shipping as individual can only imagine what they'd want for a group buy

Saltwaterfish, Clunky interface, a single fish listed multiple times, not as varied stock.

Vivid Aquariums, one of the better priced sites, very good but slightly limited fish stock one of the most limited invert and coral stock

Coral Imports, Easy to navigate site, good pricing, if they have EVER carried it it is listed(exp: list 25 Anthias but only 7 in stock)

These were in no particular order. There were a couple of others but the stock in those were extremely limited.

Like i said I'm just seeing if there was an interest, and how many would. I know we aren't a huge club, but the more that get involved the better negotiating position I'd have with the e-tailer. Maybe able to get a good discount, or free goody's that we can lottery out among those involved in the buy.

If this work the way I think it does. Everyone would have 2-6 weeks to place and pay for any orders. They would get a week to ten days to ship it out to me then I'd meet everyone to give them there order.

So if anyone is interested go check out these sites.

One thing I was wondering about was when would be best for any involved.

Start buy Monday, Jan 25th thru Friday, Feb 26th delivery Saturday, March 12th? That is 5 weeks of buy in

or start Monday Feb 8th thru Friday Feb 26th again delivery March 12th

everyone can see the xmas credit card bills and then see what they want spend.

Now this is all with negotiating with the e-tiler of choice and securing a meet spot.

Today Sept. 24th start next Thursday Oct 1st, thru Friday Oct 30th delivery Saturday Nov 8th might be a little hard

Don't want to do it anytime after that till February because of the xmas crunch.

I have no preference on time. Have to see what each place has but I'd likely be game for something. Some of the stuff I still want are common...some not so much locally.

I would be in. I have ordered all my fish livestock, most of the cleanup crew and a few corals from blue zoo aquatics and had great success with them. Always packed well, no dead loss and they are easy to work with. They are on the west coast and pack/ship very late in the afternoon. With the 2 hour time change it means they spent less time in bags.

Well last night I sent emails out to the seven sites.

Live Aquaria responded with a form letter saying "All of our fish, inverts, corals, plants and live rock are shipped directly from the wild or their breeders to be held in our aquatic centers.  They wait in quarantine being fed high quality frozen foods and constantly inspected for illness." and "Our aquatic life are packed to withstand a 48 hour shipment, though the packages typically arrive directly to your door in less the 24 hours.  In the event of a delay, we've seen our fish last upwards of 6 days in shipping and be fine when they arrive to their destination.  We assure that the specimens have heat or ice packs to control the temperature inside their insulated box, and the packages are marked with "Live Animal" warnings so they are treated well."

Coral Imports responded with an email from a sales rep named Peter saying "Sounds like a good idea :)" and "For WYSIWYG, held items need to have firm commitments. Just let me know generally what you're looking to spend, and I'll get a % off back to you."

Right now, no contest. Have to wait and see what the other sites say.

Two more responded

saltwaterfish.com "We currently don't have a set up for a group buy.  One person would have to create an account, would be responsible for the purchase, and following through with guarantee requirements.  We do offer the same great deals for everyone, so it may be beneficial to purchase individually."

Vivid Aquariums came back with "We try to schedule delivery ASAP, accommodating our customers as much as possible. As far as bonuses/advantages are concerned, it's a two way street. The more generous a customer is with us, the more generous we are in return."

So far it looks like Coral Imports are the only ones that can or willing to do something like a group buy.

Well that is all that has emailed me back. I would have liked to see what Blue Zoo Aquatics would have done. But it looks like Coral Imports are the only one that wants to work with us on this. I have sent them a reply asking about all the "out of stock" items.whether they are usually out of stock or if this a bad time for them?

I've been emailing Paul from Coral Imports and think will be just after the new year. Just not enough time to have gotten it done for this next meet. And with the BIG SPENDING SEASON coming thought it'd be best. I don't know if it's true but Paul was telling me that a bit of the stuff they are out of stock most likely will be around the Jan-Feb time frame.

Looks like Coral Imports shut down today.  Thread on RC in the General Reef forum.  The Owner commented to confirm that they were shutting down.

Looks like you're right. Everything "Coral Imports" is closed down or unable to connect. Well if that don't suck and big hairy left one. They were the only ones willing to help us out. The others are all "You have to pick someone to collect the money and place the order" We can do that if any one wants to. We'll have to pick a different site  but it can still be done. I was thinking we could go with either Blue Zoo or Live Aquaria if this is still on, they both have a large selection with fair prices. If we go that way we'll need to discuss who is going to handle the money and order. I would do it but it'd be more comfortable with doing cash. I'm not that familiar with accepting money thru paypal.  If any one wants to discuss this at the next meet I'll be there.

easiest thing would just a small group who go together with enough stuff to trigger the free shipping at Live Aquaria/Divers Den.  Its shipping cost that sort of prohibits/discourages me buying livestock online.
