West Bay Reef Pictures - Roatan, Honduras

In April, I was lucky enough to snorkel on the reefs of Roatan. It was awsome. I took probably a 100 pictures, and thought I would share a few of them.

In December I was lucky enough to return to Roatan. This time we snorkeled on the reefs just off the beach. Unfortunately the water was a bit rough, but we did see a variety of different fish. However, many of the corals did not look healthy. :(

Here's a few new pictures:

Were you boat shuttled to the reef on your first trip? In my experience in the places I have been the places off the beach are never as healthy looking as those further away requiring a boat to get to. I always attributed it to the amount of people who could access the reef. As well as those that casually snorkel off beach don't always show the same respect as those that are paying to see the better reef further offshore.

On our first trip, we took a boat out to the reef. On that trip the reef was much healthier. This time the water was pretty rough. So we didn't want to waste money and just snorkeled off the beach.

Many many years go went to the Keys, Duck Key to be specific, went snorkeling in the canals saw Royal Gramma, Angels, Butterflies, a Nurse Shark, a couple of Tarpon was great water was supper clear, could see forever it seemed like. The went back the exact same place a few years later just after Dennis went thru, was like swimming in a bowl of skim milk. Just before we left it was getting better but everything had a coating of talcum powder on it. Wish I was into saltwater tanks back then, might have tried to bring a few things back with me.
