Diamond Watchman Goby right? if so it might hook up with a pistol shrimp. I like that relationship. Shrimp constantly moving sand and the goby sitting there like it's doing something important. Any way it's a hansom fellow.

Your tank looks awesome...the coral look great! Heads up...That Goby is famous for carpet surfing.  ;) When I first started, I loved that fish for turning over my sand.

there is a screen top on the tank.  I was happy to have it after I saw him jumping in the bag.  Yeah i am loving how clean he is keeping the sand bed.  The snails that were just staying there have decided its best to move to the rocks and glass and let him have the sand bed, which is also good with me.

Tank Update

Fish are doing well.  Had a Bangai disappear and never reappear.  All the rest are doing fine.

Stocking List so far:

2 - Percula Clowns

1- Bangai Cardnial

2- Firefish

1 - Diamond Watchman Goby

1 - Fire Shrimp

still looking to add another Fire Shrimp, 3 Anthias, 1 Midas Blenny, 1 Flameback Angel, 1 Kole Tang

Sadly most of the corals I got locally went STN and RTN.  I've been battling low Alk and subsequently low Mag and eventually low Calcium.  I am keeping everything up right now.  Looking at the tank I have what I am pretty sure is coraline colonizing every square inch of available rock.  Its sucking both Alk and Calcium out of the water pretty good.  I picked up some purple digi, couple heads of frogspawn and a leather while on vacation and they seem to be doing ok.. the digi is not the happiest but until everything stabilizes I don't think I will be adding any more corals.

Did a 20 galon water change today.

Tested water after the change -

Magnesium-1400

Alkalinity - 9.84

Calcium - 415( dosed to bring it to 425)

Phosphates - 0.00

I can live with those numbers

Lyretail are doing great. One is already showing the male dorsal spike. Some chasing but no nipping and everyone has plenty of hiding spots.

Today I tried to add a friend for my Bangai. The second one I had disappeared a while back. I added one and the current one was not impressed. Chased and buffaloed the new one into a corner and would not let him out. Rather than let the current one possibly kill him I pulled the new one out and returned him.

I also added a very very tiny Ruby red dragonet. Hopefully he makes it. Has hunted all day and his belly looks full. Also added a second fire shrimp and with the return if the bangai added a skunk cleaner shrimp. Everyone seems good to go.

I worry about your tank being a little young for that dragonet if you can not get him to feed on something prepared. I noticed the Tisbe pods are becoming available. I think it is possible to culture them to help boost population.

Tank is covered in pods. I will dose if I see a dip of any magnitude in the numbers. Ahe wasn't in great shape and I doubt he would have made it much longer there so at least he has a chance now. I have managed to get mandarins to eat shrimp and other foods before. I'll try with this guy to in time. It definitely helps.

Trent I have no idea on the sex. I understood that they are very hard to tell...something about the shape of the jaw line. After the aggressive behavior I saw I am fine with only having one.

been Holding pretty true to the stocking list.

Ending up with

1x bangai Cardnial

2x percula Clowns

2x standard firefish

1x Diamond Watchman goby

2x Fire shrimp

1x Skunk Cleaner Shrimp

3 Lyretail Anthias

1x Ruby Red Dragonet

Still to be added:

1x Midas Blenny

1x Flameback Angel

1x - Kole or Tomni Tang or White tail Bristletooth ( Ctenochaetus flavicauda)

Going to concentrate on adding fish over the next few months.  Worked up a stocking list much like before but with a few other fish I have always wanted but always had to small of a tank.

2 x Bangai Cardnials
2 x Percula clowns
1 x purple firefish
1 x midas goby
1 x Flameback Angel
1 x Kole Tang
3 - Lyretail Antias (females)

The ruby red is looking "fuller" I did go ahead and add 3 packs of tisbee pods to the tank after lights out on Friday. I'll keep an eye on the little fella and make sure there is some good weight gain.

I have the old 40 in the garage and its cycled.  now I am pondering setting up a phyto and pod culture little system in it.

I don't know how hard it would be to set up a culture tank. I would just think circulation and some food. I would guess the hardest part would be sorting out how much food. I wouldn't flake be ok though? I would not think would need to do photo but I don't know much about them. More than willing to help set something up. I have some rock lying in a bin on back porch if need some rock to add to tank.

I have about 20lbs in the 40.  had the water running and even had the skimmer going, other than a heater I am pretty good to go on it.  .  Pretty much from what I can gather you seed the culture with some pods and feed it a little with either phyto or food and let them do their little bunny rabbit ways.  Most I have seen did a lot smaller than a 40 though... more like a 5 or 10 gallon tank.  descriptions I've read were of just dipping Tupperware out for dosing to the main tank.

I threw some cheato with pods in it in the 40 bredded setup in the garage. Adding a second heater should get it through the winter I hope. Seeing pods in it so hopefully I can get it filled with pods.

The Ruby Red is looking 100% better still could use fattening up but looking much better.

I cut back on feeding and took a turkey baster to the cyano. I caught it with a filter sock and its not coming back very fast.

I've been reading up on vinegar dosing and algae scrubbers. The only downside I see the the scrubber other than weekly maintenance is that it out competes cheato. A rock fuge for pods could work and reports say they will populate the algae screen as well.

Downside of the vinegar dosing is needing a dosing pump to spread out the doses if you don't do it throughout the day.

I may try vinegar to help keep nitrates and phosphates under control. Right now I am thinking a slow drip of a diluted solution will work. Only going with 10ml a day to see how everything reponds.. I don't want to end up with lr full of phosphates and taking months and months to get algae under control. Been there, done that.

Seams to me I read somewhere about dripping diluted solutions not being effective. Was ages ago when I read up on all that stuff. Scrubbers are supposed to work well because you can maximize light to algae. I contemplated trying to build on a while ago but with two bulbs and everything else it would take was gonna take up too much space. If you want to build on I am more than willing to help and toss in the bit of knowledge I have. The prefab ones were pretty expensive at the time.
