Trying It Again, 40 Breeder, Well Maybe 93 Cube

Recommended Posts

the ones on amazon were half the price and work fine.  Someone had complained that they didn't open and close very smoothly but mine seemed to work fine.

I was able to find ball valves everywhere but gate valve were tough.  Seems like Ace was the only one with any selection of those and it varied by store.

1 or 2 - Fire Shrimp

eventually a Red Mandarin once the tank matures

I had a blue way back.  I like them a lot.  The Red Spot Dragonettes have me thinking but I am just not sure they do well in captivity

Well tank has been doing extremely well.  But I sort of wanted a bigger tank and since the opportunity arose I pulled the trigger on a 93 Cube.  I overbuilt the stand with the eventual idea to upgrade to a 135 cube so I don't have a ton of work to do to make this 93 happen.  Also I don't have much livestock in the tank now so it will be much easier on that front as well.

Tank is a standard Marineland 93 cube with the built in overflow.  2 - 1" bulkheads came standard.  I got the call just now that a local place got it drilled for a 3/4" bulkhead in the overflow as well.  This way I can use a herbie style (siphon and trickle drains) on the 1"lines and the 3/3" line will be my return line.

I'll try to grab some pics as the build completes.

93 cube is up and running. Long day and a few things should be here Monday to finish it out. From moving the sand the water is cloudy. I put a filter sock on the drain to hopefully help it clear in the morning so I can do the rock work.

Yeah I have to say I am way jealous of your new cube. It's what I would have like to have gotten but space was not my friend where I wanted to put it. Get a pic up when it clears a bit.

I moved most of the rock out of the sump this morning so It's stirred up a little again.  The filter sock is helping I think.  If I turn on the skimmer it just overflows the cup with all fines in the tank so I have it off.

I need to order about 50lbs more rock.  I wasn't quite ready when the sale was going on so I may wait a week or 2 before ordering.

30 more lbs of sand is on its way and I will be ordering more rock in a few weeks. I want to change up the smaller island and the smallest one is a chunk of rock that will probably go back in the sump when I get something better.

Ok Tank update.

Light

I set mine to ramp hourly.  I have the white channel set to about 25% less than the blue channel.  I removed the optics over the weekend and dropped the light to about 6" off the top of the water.  I wasn't getting full coverage front to back and now everything seems happy and plenty of light.  I didn't even really increase the power levels any.  i did add the moonlights to on during the day but that was to get more of a crisp look.

This is my schedule (from memory, will update post this evening if I am far off) and the corals seem to like it.  The nice thing with the ramping is I can adjust it anytime.

W = White, UV and Colored LEDS

B = Blues

M = 5 moon light blues

0:00 = W=0 B=0 M-0

1:00 = W=0 B=0 M-0

2:00 = W=0 B=0 M-0

3:00 = W=0 B=0 M-0

4:00 = W=0 B=0 M-0

5:00 = W=0 B=0 M-5

6:00 = W=0 B=5 M-10

7:00 = W=5 B=10 M-15

8:00 = W=5 B=20 M-20

9:00 = W=10 B=30 M-50

10:00 = W=15 B=40 M-50

11:00 = W=25 B=50 M-50

12:00 = W=25 B=50 M-50

13:00 = W=35 B=60 M-50

14:00 = W=35 B=60 M-50

15:00 = W=25 B=50 M-50

16:00 = W=15 B=40 M-50

17:00 = W=5 B=30 M-50

18:00 = W=0 B=20 M-50

19:00 = W=0 B=10 M-25

20:00 = W=0 B=0 M-10

21:00 = W=0 B=0 M-5

22:00 = W=0 B=0 M-0

23:00 = W=0 B=0 M-0

And a few pics.

lol ... maybe a meet next year I will have a big enough colony for fragging.

Can one of the Mods edit the title of this thread to reflect the 93 Cube instead of the 40 breeder?

Going to concentrate on adding fish over the next few months.  Worked up a stocking list much like before but with a few other fish I have always wanted but always had to small of a tank.

2 x Bangai Cardnials
2 x Percula clowns
1 x purple firefish
1 x midas goby
1 x Flameback Angel
1 x Kole Tang
3 - Lyretail Antias (females)
2 x Fire Shrimp
1 x Mandarin Goby

Tang and Angel will likely be the last 2 fish added to the system.

Looks like I wasn't lucky enough to get a pair but they are tolerating each other in tank. They just usually hang out in different areas. Hopefully it stays that way and I don't get to fish one out.
