Club Meeting Places In Pensacola

Recommended Posts

It would be really great to do a meet and greet with everyone. Unfortunately, one of the problems has been getting the time and people to set-up a meeting. The next problem is finding a location that first has enough room and second allows us to set-up an area for doing a frag swap. Here are a few options:

1. Larry did a ton of research looking for places to hold meetings, and he found a location at the public library in downtown Pensacola. The library has meeting rooms that would meet our needs, but they book-up quickly and must be reserved in advance.

2. We could do a meeting at someone's house. Most of the meetings I've gone to have been this type of meeting. The down side to this is having the room for that many people.

3. And finally, we could do a meeting at Petland. Before everyone flames me, let me put a couple things out there. A while ago I would have been the first to say that is a horrible idea, but the new management / owner seems to be really trying to clean this place up and change their image. Okay, I still may be little scared of buying their fish, and would elect to buy elsewhere. However, they have made good headway with their corals. Have they had pests? Sure...but it is pretty hard to control this when you're buying from wholesale distributors. However, they are actively treating the problem and even offer free dipping (Coral RX) of every coral before you take it home. I have personally received several of their corals over the past few months...all pest-free and very healthy.

So with that said, I have been in communications with Steven at Petland about setting up meeting in their community room. Based on our initial discussions, I think this can be a very good option for us in the Pensacola area, and here's why based on the initial conversation:

1. They will most likely allow us to set-up our own tank for frag swaps.

2. JR the owner has a direct link to Julian Sprung and may be able to set up something for us.

3. They may be willing to donate door prizes or provide good discounts during the meeting.

I think it gets us together to meet old and new members, and if we end up not liking the location, we can always try another location. As for those that are concerned about puppy mills........don't know the owner's view on this. And to be honest...my passion is corals...so that's my focus.

Have you checked with the library to see what is available?

I would be willing to make that drive from FWB.. As far as petland Stephan is great and has gone great lengths to make that store better and never had any issues with any of his livestock..Going back to bugs nudis ich it is not the stores fault you get any of these as a experienced hobbyist it is up to you to qt and clean your own livestock I do that with anyone I buy from I dont take chances..As far as the puppy mill thing I dont support it but if I am at their place I am sure not going to voice it.

Larry - the answer to that question is no. Unfortunately, my work schedule was a little unbearable for a while and it really didn't leave me much time for anything else. But it has finally calmed down and I'm trying to get more involved again. I have spent a lot of time lately trying to keep the website up. :) Now, it's time to get everyone together and start helping our local reefers? Hopefully, others will want to get involved.

How is that beautiful tank of your's doing? My wife has finally approved my next tank upgrade, and I need to talk with you on a design plan for my next tank stand. Do you have the contact information for someone at the library?

I know, he suggested it because it is a slower day in the store. I still need to work out details, but wanted to put out feelers before I set something up anywhere. :)

Hi Kevin,

The tank is doing great. The light is marginal for SPS, but my Zoa's, mushrooms, and green buttons are breeding like rabbits. The Euphillia torch and frogspawn, and my Duncan are are starting new buds as well. As far as the stand, stop over and we can look at some ideas for it.

As far as the library goes, I don't have a specific contact, but I'll get one for you early tomorrow and shoot you a PM with the info.

I am game if on my off weekend. If petland is willing to let us use their room for free I would say easy choice. Whether you like their fish coral stock or not if they are willing to help them that is great. I buy food from them and occasionally other dry goods so no problem here.

Richard
