Reef Club Meetings

By Dr. Hank

A number of individuals have asked about what goes on at a FPRS club meeting. Of the many which I have attended, each one has been a little different but each has been enjoyable in its own way. It’s a gathering of folks with similar interests and a chance to discuss just about anything you like related to the hobby. Generally, it’s held at one of our sponsor’s places of business and often member specials on goods or livestock are provided by our host.

There are often talks or presentations given by our members on a specific aspect of the hobby. Sometimes there is a demonstration of a DIY project or a how to do talk. We’ve had everything from how to build a turf scrubber to a talk on chemistry in a reef aquarium, to the breeding of marine fish. It’s always enlightening and enjoyable.

Several times we have had raffles for products and gift certificates provided by our sponsors. We’ve even raffled a complete nano set up with the tank donated by the manufacturer and set up by donations from club members.

The times that we’ve been at the Gulfarium, we even get to view their “Living Sea”. That’s worth the entire trip to me. It’s great to see the reef system grow and the diversity of fish and corals available to folks in the hobby in a very natural environment. I was even fortunate enough to get a beautiful Fiji yellow coral from their tank. That was two years ago and it’s doing great in my tank at home.

In addition to the four meetings each year, the club has two special events each year. The first is a picnic/BBQ where the whole family can get together and have a great family time. Food for members and their guests is provided for free by the club and there is a small donation requested for any non members who would like to attend.

Starting this year, we are also having a snorkeling trip. It’s another chance for a family get together, an opportunity to play at the beach and just have a good time. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to find a few of our members capturing some local marine specimens for their tanks.

I could go on and on about all the great things about being a member of the Florida Panhandle Reefkeepers Society (FPRS) but I hope this will give you some idea of what to expect. I can sum it up best with only three words. FUN, FUN & FUN!

If this sounds like something that you might be interested in, I encourage you to come to one of our meetings and check things out!
